I don’t have a huge collection of Chaplin Hand Planes, but I’ll share what I have.

Here is another great site with additional information http://www.petermcbride.com/chaplin/

Chaplin Patented planes were manufactured by Towers & Lyon of New York between 1872-1900.

This first set of images is for the original US Patent: 126,519 issued to Orril R. Chaplin – Boston, MA Granted: May 07, 1872. In the photo above, the two planes on the left are from this patent.

After this John J. Tower – New York, NY patented an improvement, US Patent: 179,494

Here is the original Patent shown first.

Note this style doesn’t have a lateral adjustment mechanism. This style is usually seen with a hardwood knob and tote.

US Patent: 716,386 granted to Maschil D. Converse – New York City, NY, Granted: Dec. 23, 1902, Assignees: John J. Tower – Montclair, NJ.

This next one is known as the Chaplin Improved Patented Plane.
