I made my own saw vise. I never really like the manufactured vises. I obviously haven’t tried them all, and lot of folks like them, so be your own judge. As to the pockets, if I put anything in them that stick up, they get in the way, so keep that in mind.
This is just a block of wood used to hold the saw nuts so they go back into the same hole they came out of.
I need some kind of magnifier. I really like this visor, it’s a Carson Optical Pro Series MagniVisor Deluxe Head-Worn LED Lighted Magnifier with 4 Different Lenses (1.5x, 2x, 2.5x, 3x) (CP-60)
I still use the post lamp type for the additional light and some occasional inspections, especially if I want to look at saw teeth when they are not in the vise.
At first I would recommend starting with a block of wood cut at the angle instead of the veritas file holder. Every time the block comes back it registers against the plate so you don’t have to think about watching the angle. But the File holder works well once you get accustom to the process. I’m not suggesting you need the veritas, you really don’t, but it does OK.
I have two saw jointers but I don’t use either one. I just hold the file flat. I’d make one if I wanted to use one but I think you’ll quickly find you don’t need it.

I’ve never used the style with the gauge on the front to show the set, but if I ever find one reasonable in my travels I’m going to try it. (of course reasonable means cheap)
